about

These are all four unedited solo improvisations for tape loop. A variety of instruments were played through a variety of effects pedals into a mixer that fed all 8 tracks of a 1/2” open reel tape machine (Tascam TSR8) with an approximately 11’ loop of tape. One reel was on the machine itself and a second reel was on a cymbal stand about 5 feet away. I would typically start with all 8 tracks armed and recording, and then turn them off and perhaps back on again as I chose. The tape machine outputs went to DAW for capture. The “fade outs” at the ends of each of the pieces were made by applying a very strong magnet to the tape slowly, or even rhythmically in a couple places. Instruments used were: a homemade instrument fondly referred to as “the electric coat rack” (the neck is a pipe that is affixed to the wooden base much like a coat rack) which is a sort of one stringed, fretted, electric cello (beta debt, sleep static), a Casio SK5 (silky link), and soft samplers and synths (neon nominee).
